Where marks are lost
Why students struggle in MDM4U.
- Counting problems are attempted before the distinction between order-matters and order-doesn't is secure
- Conditional probability is confused with joint probability, which corrupts a whole unit
- Distribution questions are answered by guessing which formula to use rather than reading the scenario
- The culminating project is worth a large share of the mark and is routinely started too late
How we teach it
Our approach.
- Drill scenario classification first — identify the model, then apply the formula
- Use tree diagrams and tables to make conditional probability visible
- Plan the culminating project on a written timeline from week three of the semester
- Practise interpretation, since MDM4U marks reward explanation as much as calculation
Why it matters
What this course decides.
MDM4U is accepted as a Grade 12 U mathematics credit for most commerce, business, social science and health science programmes, and often carries a higher achievable average than MHF4U.
Built in, not sold separately
Study skills every session.
Every MDM4U session uses retrieval practice on earlier units, spaced review, interleaved problem sets and timed exam simulation before assessments. Study skills are part of the programme, never a separate add-on.
